Safety Team attends Reasonable Suspicion Training

Reasonable Suspicion Training Guide

The BION Safety Team attend a full day of training on Reasonable Suspicion in the workplace. With so many changes federally and with each individual state defining “impairment” somewhat differently it was very important for the team to gain clarity and confirm best practices moving forward. There are 5 essential elements of Reasonable Suspicion.

  1. Observation-Personally witnessing unusual/uncharacteristic behaviors
  2. Confirmation-Appearance, Speech, Odor or Behavior are consistent with signs of impairment.
  3. Documentation-Specifically and clearly state in writing the observations. The language you use in the documentation should come directly from the company Employee Handbook and user guides.
  4. Confrontation-Discuss with the employee in a confidential and safe environment your suspicion. Describe what you have observed and documented and be clear on next steps including testing. Ensure safe transportation to the nearest testing facility.
  5. Instruct the driver to complete a drug test at the location laid out in the Employee Handbook. Once results are completed follow the protocols laid out in the Employee Handbook.

Overall it was a great day of both Instruction and hands on learning as the team was treated to experts from law enforcement and companies who were able to give specific examples and policies to follow to ensure safety at every level.
