BION received the Vista Award for “Best Healthcare Renovation Project 2023” at the PDC ASHE Conference in San Diego. Only two Vista Awards are awarded each year (new construction and renovation). Project nominations are received and reviewed nationally. BION won the awarded for the OR Renovation Project.
As described by Phil Antypas, HITT Contracting Project Manager, “The Inova Fairfax Medical Campus Tower OR Renovation modernized the existing 40,000-sf ground floor surgery center. The renovated 30-operating room (OR) suite supports Inova’s mission of providing world-class healthcare to the community. The project goals included standardizing OR design, consolidating sterile cores, creating a hybrid OR, and modernizing finishes, fixtures, and technologies. The renovated OR suite provides a cohesive, modern surgical platform with standardized workflows, updated technology, and integrated audiovisual capabilities. The project resulted in a 4% increase in surgical volume from 2019 to 2022. The design improvements have led to greater surgeon satisfaction, retention, and operational efficiency.”
Some of the challenges that we faced were overcoming obstacles such as patient and hospital staff safety, coordination of infrastructure, commissioning, and phasing/schedule management. Extensive communication and collaboration with the project team, subcontractors, Inova faculty and facilities, and design team were crucial in achieving schedule dates.
