September 23, 2013, BION celebrated its 5th year in business. John Fitzgerald, BION partner, reflected on the first 5 years: “The first 5 years have been a blur of sleepless nights, worrying whether we have made the correct decisions during our job planning, work schedules, health insurance decisions, everything being based on having the responsibility of not only our families but our extended family. All of which consist of the BION employees counting on us to make the right decisions as
It’s official! Don and Josie completed their first race (just don’t ask them their time!). It was great fun for all involved and Team ‘Run Strong’ exceeded their initial goal by raising $2,016! Proceeds from the 5th Annual Star Kid 8K Race benefited the pediatric heart program at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. The race raised over $94,000. Don and Josie would like to thank all of their generous sponsors and those who came out to cheer them on to the finish
Our own South Patient Tower project was featured in the Summer 2010 edition of Inova Magazine. According to the article, some of the intricacies of the new patient tower include: 174 all-private intensive care and medical/surgical patient rooms Intensive care units grouped by specialty so patients don’t have to change floors Telemetry capability on each medical/surgical floor for in-room cardiac monitoring L. BION’s own Don Ripley and Josie Geiger ran in the Star Kid 8K Race to benefit Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. Each year, more than 300 children with heart defects receive life-saving treatment through the work of Inova’s expert medical team. From the most fragile newborns to growing teens, Inova provides cardiac care for all in need. Proceeds from the race went directly to helping these special cardiac patients. Held at George Mason University, this was the first race that either
Fairfax Hospital awarded Shapiro & Duncan and BION the mechanical construction work for its South Patient Tower. The project consisted of adding a new 11-story patient tower adjacent to the existing patient tower. In addition to patient rooms, the new structure features an ultrasound suite, cafe and the addition of a cooling tower at the power plant.
The project included phased renovation of interior space for a histology lab, offices, IT space and reconfiguration of the existing morgue. It also provided space for a temporary grossing area while the project was under construction. All work outside the renovation space, including the new chilled water piping for a new, custom air handling unit serving the lab/morgue space, was being performed off-hours. BION utilized copper pipe and the Viega pipe fitting system in order to eliminate the need for brazing
BION has completed construction of the Heart & Vascular Institute Hybrid CVOR project. This project consisted of creating a hybrid operating room that results in a CVOR surgical suite and a cardiac catheterization lab in the same space. This combined suite affords tremendous benefits to both hospital staff and patients.
BION’s own Josie Geiger joined thousands of others in a charity walk to benefit breast cancer. More than 2,900 participants raised $6.5 million dollars for research, awareness and access to treatment. The walk consisted of two days and a total of 39.3 miles; day one was 26.2 miles with day two ending after 13.1 miles. The walk took participants from the Washington Monument, past the Capital Buildings, the White House, through Georgetown and even past the Mormon Temple! It was often
BION successfully coordinated the placement of an air handling unit at Fairfax Hospital, utilizing a 550-ton crane. It required 17 trucks to transport the crane to the job site. A crane of such magnitude was required due to the extensive distance that needed to be covered to safely place the air handling unit. A project of this scale called for precise communication between a number of organizations and agencies: BION coordinated with Gulf Coast Crane Services, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT),
